The Department of Education (ED) recently issued a Dear Colleague Letter
(DCL) which stresses the importance of addressing data system issues surrounding
the year 2000. The DCL provides several general steps which ED suggests
all institutions follow to ensure all systems will be Year 2000 Compliant.
ED asks all institutions to seek information regarding the year 2000 compliance
plan of any third party vendors or servicers that provide software or other
Student Financial Assistance (SFA) services.
The deadline for compliance is January 1, 1999, as outlined in the
1998-99 Action Letter #2 (GEN-97-11). Any questions regarding the year
2000 compliance requirements can be e-mailed to ED at: ope_y2k@ed.gov
Please visit ED's web-site at http://ifap.ed.gov
to obtain a copy of the DCL. If you are unable to access this web-site
and would like a copy of the DCL, please contact Lynda Reid at (801) 321-7211.
Any questions regarding this letter can be directed to the UHEAA Policy
and Training Department at (801) 321-7166.
