The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently published a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL), 98-L-200 advising lenders of the importance of an aggressive approach to the AYear 2000" (Y2K) problem to ensure that the FFEL Program will continue unimpaired. Attached to the DCL is an overview of how ED will deal with the Y2K problem and what ED expects lenders will do to be Y2K compliant. Additionally, ED stresses that all institutions should take appropriate steps to ensure that the organizations you interact with are taking similar actions to prepare their systems.
A copy of the DCL can be found on ED’s web-site at http://ifap.ed.gov. If you are unable to access this web-site and would like a copy of the DCL, please contact Lynda Reid at (801) 321-7211.
