1998-99 Teacher Shortage Areas for Utah

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has designated the following areas as teacher shortage areas for Utah during the 1998-99 school year:

  •    Audiology
  •    Special Education - Mild/Moderate
  •    Hearing Impaired
  •    Severely Handicapped
  •    Special Education (Birth-Age 5)
  •    Speech Pathology, K-12
  •    Visually Impaired
  • This federal designation of teacher shortage areas in Utah enables borrowers who had no outstanding Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans on July 1, 1987, but who had an outstanding FFELP loan on July 1, 1993, to qualify for deferment of loan repayment under the Federal Stafford and Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS) programs. Deferments are authorized for up to three years of service as a full-time teacher in a teacher shortage area. The principals of the schools in which the borrowers teach have authority to certify that the borrowers have taught in a federally designated teacher shortage area.

Any questions regarding teacher shortage areas can be directed to the UHEAA Policy and Training Department at (801) 321-7166.
