Changes to FAFSA Renewal Process for 2000-2001
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently issued a Dear Colleague
Letter (DCL) GEN-99-18 announcing changes to the 2000-2001 Renewal Application
process. As in previous years, institutions may request that the Central
Processing System (CPS) mail Renewal FAFSA's for designated groups of students
directly to institutions. For 2000-2001, schools will also have the option
to:
-
Choose whether to receive an electronic Renewal Application Data (RAD)
file in addition to the printed forms. Previously, RAD files were automatically
sent by the CPS along with the bulk mail Renewal FAFSAs. The electronic
RAD file includes a PIN indicator that can be used to determine whether
a student received a 2000-2001 paper Renewal FAFSA or a PIN. The PIN, Personal
Identification Number, is formally known as the Electronic Access Code
or EAC.
-
Request that PINs be mailed to students instead of paper Renewal FAFSAs.
Sending students PINS in place of paper Renewal FAFSAs will encourage students
to use Renewal FAFSA on the web.
Institutions may begin submitting requests for 2000-2001 Renewal Application
data on October 4, 1999. All requests must be received no later than October
29, 1999. The DCL provides additional information in a question and answer
format. A schedule of important dates for the processing period is also
included. A second DCL containing more extensive information on how to
submit your 2000-2001 Renewal Application request is scheduled to be released
in August 1999.
Questions regarding this DCL may be directed to the Central Processing
System Customer Service Division at (800) 330-5947, or by e-mail at CPS@NCS.COM.
