1999-2000 Teacher Shortage Areas for Utah

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently issued a letter designating the following areas as teacher shortage areas for Utah during the 1999-00 school year:

Audiology
Special Education - Mild/Moderate
Hearing Impaired
Severely Handicapped
Special Education (Birth-Age 5)
Speech Pathology, K-12
Visually Impaired

This federal designation of teacher shortage areas in Utah enables borrowers who had no outstanding Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) loans on July 1, 1987, but who had an outstanding FFELP loan on July 1, 1993, to qualify for deferment of loan repayment under the Federal Stafford and Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS) programs.  Deferments are authorized for up to three years of service as a full-time teacher in a teacher shortage area.  The principals of the schools in which the borrowers teach have authority to certify that the borrowers have taught in a federally designated teacher shortage area.

Questions regarding teacher shortage area deferments may be directed to the Federal Student Aid Hotline at 1-800-4FED-AID.  If you would like a copy of the letter, please contact Lynda Reid at (801) 321-7211.  Any questions regarding this letter may be directed to the UHEAA Policy and Training Department at (801) 321-7166 or by e-mail at cjudd@utahsbr.edu.
