ED Retracts Guidance on New Special Allowance Codes
In response to many concerns in the FFELP community, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) issued a notice, dated March 10, 2000, announcing that the new special allowance codes for new loans first disbursed on or after January 1, 2000 will be accepted by ED for the reporting period ending March 31, 2000 as originally stated in ED's December 1999 Notice (see UHEAA Bulletin Volume 2000 - Issue 05). The March 2000 notice supercedes guidance provided in ED's February 2000 bulletin (see UHEAA Bulletin Volume 2000 - Issue 17). ED apologizes for the confusion over the implementation of these new special allowance codes.
Any questions concerning the special allowance reporting should be directed to ED's Office of Student Financial Assistance at (202) 708-9776 or by e-mail at OSFA_LR@ed.gov. A copy of this notice is available on ED's web site at http://www.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/IGAL. If you are unable to access ED's web site and would like a hard copy, please contact Lynda Reid at (801) 321-7211. Any questions concerning this Bulletin should be directed to the UHEAA Policy and Training Department at (801) 321-7166 or by e-mail at cjudd@utahsbr.edu.
