NSLDS Loan Status Codes

    The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently published a Technical Update, GA-2000-09, concerning the changes being made to loan status codes.  The Technical Update provides a detailed implementation plan and explains when and under what circumstances the new loan status codes must be used.  NSLDS is planning to make the necessary system changes to implement the new codes by January 1, 2001.  Lenders and lender servicers are encouraged to begin using the new codes beginning on January 1, 2001 rather than waiting until July 1, 2001.  The Technical Update strongly encourages the lender community to update loan data, including balances, at least monthly.
