Sample Default Management Plan
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently released a Dear Partner Letter, GEN-01-08, providing a sample default management plan that replaces the guidance provided in Appendix D to 34 CFR 668 "Default Reduction Measures." As of July 1, 2001, Appendix D to Part 668 will be replaced with the guidance provided in the "Sample Default Management Plan" which provides updated information about default reduction measures. The Sample Default Management Plan is provided as an attachment to this Dear Partner Letter. If a school is required to use a default management plan, under 34 CFR 668.14(b)(15), because it is participating in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) for the first time or it has undergone a change in ownership, the school's implementation of the sample plan will satisfy those requirements. ED also recommends that other schools consider implementing some or all of the measures described in the plan.
If you have any questions concerning the Sample Default Management Plan, please contact ED's Case Management Team at 1-303-844-3677, extension 100.
