Note 1.  The U. S. Department of Education (ED) recently approved the use of the multi-year (serial) feature of the Stafford Master Promissory Note (MPN) for all schools in the United States that participate in the Federal Family Education Loan and Federal Direct Loan programs.  This new authority allows any U.S. school, unless otherwise notified by ED, to certify multiple loans for a borrower under one MPN.  In general, only four-year and graduate/professional schools were previously authorized to use the serial feature.
