Military Deferment Extended

Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority was notified that on September 12 President Bush extended the declaration of the National Emergency with Respect to Certain Terrorist Attacks.  The national emergency first declared on September 11, 2001, was last extended on September 5, 2006.  The current extension of the declaration also extends the “Military Deferment” for FFELP Loans.

The military deferment, which is loan specific, is available for a borrower’s loan(s) first disbursed on or after July 1, 2001.  The borrower must be serving on active duty during a war or other military operation, or a national emergency.  A borrower who is performing qualifying National Guard duty during a war or other military operation, or a national emergency is also eligible to apply for the deferment.

The Presidential Notice extends for an additional year the national emergency that was in effect only until September 14, 2007.  A copy of the notice is attached.
